Jens Peter Maintz

Jens Peter MaintzIn April 2004 Jens Peter Maintz was appointed as the successor of Wolfgang Boettchers professorship for Violoncello at the Universität der Künste Berlin. At the latest since Jens Peter Maintz won the 1st Prize in the Violoncello category of the ARD-Competition in 1994, which hadn't been awarded for 17 years, he belongs to the leading cellists of his generation. Born 1967 in Hamburg Jens Peter Maintz studied with David Geringas and received further artistical impulses in master classes with Heinrich Schiff, Frans Helmerson, Boris Pergamenschikow and Siegfried Palm. His concerto repertoire includes works of all periods from Baroque to the newest contemporary works.
Since 1995 Jens Peter Maintz is principal cellist of the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin under Kent Nagano. In 1998 the Trio Fontenay welcomed him as their new cellist. As a soloist and chamber musician he has toured in Germany , Austria , Switzerland , Holland , Poland , Spain , South America and in the USA . He has, among others, performed together with the Residentie Orkest Den Haag under Frans Welser Möst, the Orchestra of the Beethovenhalle in Bonn under Dennis Russel Davies, the Symphony Orchestra of the South German Radio (SDR), the Philharmonic State Orchestra in Hamburg under Gerd Albrecht and the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin under Vladimir Ashkenazy, Marek Janowski and Herbert Blomstedt.
The skill of this young cellist is documented on various CD recordings. The recording with works of J. S. Bach, Dutilleux and Kodàly (Sony Classical) was awarded the ECHO-Prize in 1997 for the best solo-recording of the year. In Autum 2003 came out a CD recording of Isang Yun`s cello concerto with the DSO Berlin for Capriccio records. In February 2004 Arte Nova published a recording of Tschaikowsky`s works for cello and orchestra, accompanied by the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra conducted by David Geringas. Jens Peter Maintz plays a Vincenzo Ruggeri Violoncello of 1696.
